i’ve been meaning to listen to the mountain goats but idk where to start what do you recommend?? <3
ooh this is a good question! You really can jump in anywhere, but here are a few of my favorites/sort of where I started listening! A lot of their most famous/popular songs are on those albums, as are some of the most common characters!
The Sunset Tree (2005) - focuses on John Darnielle’s childhood, particularly his relationship with his abusive stepfather.
Tallahassee (2002) - tells the story of “the Alpha couple” (recurring characters in much of the discography) moving to a house in Florida that mirrors their crumbling marriage and how they kinda hate each other but also refuse to part ways.
Transcendental Youth (2012) - not quite as conceptual as the previous two, but loosely focuses on a group of people living in Washington state and has themes of feeling outcast and struggling in society.
However, one of the most predominant characters/arcs is that of Jenny, a character who is sort of larger than life and both famous and infamous. She makes appearances in multiple albums, but most notably in All Hail West Texas (2002, one of my personal favorites especially having lived in West Texas for several years) and Jenny from Thebes (2023 - another one of my personal favorites of their albums).
There is a TON of tmg music both on spotify and on soundcloud and in youtube records of that one time they played that one song live and never again, so it can definitely be daunting to start! Any of these five can be a pretty good place though, since they’ll give you a solid intro to tmg’s sound and musical style, plus the narratives and characters make the albums fairly easy to follow.
#also fun fact i am wearing a tmg shirt while writing this. i am a parody of myself#anyway hope this helps!!! it is so fun to have an artist i can always find something new i havent heard#and knowing your favorite song might still be out there is so cool#the mountain goats

PETER HUGHUESSS
when i say goths is a perfect album people go well of course you, a goth, would say that. but to be honest that doesn't even come into it. the fact that originally the mountain goats was just john darnielle and a guitar and then he was like hm what if we as a band made an album without a single guitar on it is just so interesting and insane you have to respect it. and also peter hugues

My favourite genre of Mountain Goats lyric is the kind where the animal metaphor snuck in when he wasn’t looking and he’s a little mad about it

the mountain goats make music for people who spent their entire lives convinced they would die before they were 17 except now they're 26 and they have a job and friends and hobbies and they're not sure what they're meant to do now that they've survived
